Equation of lines – Vectors

In this lesson on vectors, we’ll be looking at how to find the vector equation of lines.

Format of Vector Equation of line:

The vector equation of the line is written as r = a + λb, where λ∈ ℝ, a is a position vector that lies on the line, and b is any direction vector parallel to the line.

Parametric Equation of line

The parametric equation of a line takes the form:

x = a₁ + λb₁

y = a₂ + λb₂

z = a₃ + λb₃

Cartesian Equation of line

The cartesian equation of a line takes the form:

The format of a cartesian equation of a line in vector form.
