In this lesson on vectors, we’ll be talking about vector product or cross product of vectors.
How to denote vector or cross product in Math
In Math, we denote vector product with a ✕, hence vector products are also called cross product.
The result of vector product
When we cross 2 vectors, we are finding a vector that is perpendicular to both of these vectors. Hence, the result of a cross product is a vector.
If we have vectors given in x, y or x, y, z coordinate form, we can find unit vector using the following formula. Note that this formula is provided in the formula booklet (for students taking the H2 A Level Math exam).
The video below shows how to find vector product (or cross product) of vectors in detail:
Useful results of vector product (cross product)
- When we take the cross product of two vectors, the result is a vector perpendicular to both of these vectors.
- |a x b| gives the area of a parallelogram with sides a and b.
- If 2 vectors are parallel, cross product will give a value of 0.
- a x a = 0
